Independent Professional Seed Association announces collegiate scholars, recognizes five students from across the U.S.

Seward, Nebraska, USA
September 12, 2014

The Independent Professional Seed Association (IPSA) has announced its scholarship recipients for the 2014/2015 school year. "In recognition of IPSA's 25th Anniversary, the Association has awarded five $1,000 scholarships to deserving students from across the country," offered Lou Buice, IPSA President and owner of Golden Acres Genetics in Waco, Texas. "This year's scholarship program has reached a new plateau of support from our members who made direct contributions this year to enhance existing scholarship funds."

Support from several current IPSA members, as well as gifts made years ago that have provided seed money to the program, made it possible to award the largest number of scholarships in the Association's history. Scholarship contributions were made by: Myron "Ted" Asplin family (Minnesota), Independent Corn Breeders Association, Buckhorn Manufacturing (Ohio), Central Bag Company (Kansas), Cornelius Seed Company (Iowa), Golden Acres Genetics (Texas), Grabow Seed Services (Georgia), and Langdon Bros. Seed (Indiana), along with a number of anonymous contributions made during IPSA's 25th Anniversary Conference this past January.

IPSA's Education Committee solicited participants from across the country, and reviewed over 20 applications. "The review process was challenging and rewarding - there are so many bright and talented applicants that it makes narrowing the list of winners very tough," stated Shane Ohlde, IPSA Education Committee Chairman and owner of Ohlde Seed, Palmer, Kansas. "When the Education Committee finished their review, they had five outstanding applicants to recommend to the IPSA Board of Directors for awards. I am pleased the Board saw fit to present 5 scholarships this year."

Two Myron "Ted" Asplin Scholarships were awarded this year. The first award is presented to Amanda Bryant, who is attending Kansas State University and majoring in Agricultural Economics with a specialty in Pre-Law. Amanda plans to continue her education and earn a law degree, aspiring to serve and support the agricultural industry

A second Asplin Scholarship is being awarded to Alec Weber, a 2013 graduate of Bon Homme High School in Tyndall, South Dakota. Alec is attending South Dakota State University, majoring in Agronomy with a minor in Speech Communications. Upon earning his degree, Alec plans to farm and sell seed in southeastern South Dakota

As a result of the generosity of our members, IPSA was able to award two IPSA Student Recognition Awards for the current academic year. The first was awarded to Krista Jo Kappes, an Agricultural Communications major at North Dakota State University. From Ada, Minnesota, Krista plans to pursue a career in Marketing and Agricultural Communications.

The second IPSA Student Recognition Award goes to Olivia Jones, a student at the University of Kentucky. Olivia has an Agricultural Biotechnology major, with a minor in Plant and Soil Science. Olivia plans to earn her doctoral degree, with the goal of becoming a plant geneticist and research team leader.

Receiving the Buckhorn Scholarship for 2014/2015 is Christopher Beck, a 2014 graduate of Hamilton Heights High School in Arcadia, Indiana. Chris is attending Purdue University this fall, majoring in Agricultural Economics. Chris is a familiar face to IPSA, as his family owns Beck's Superior Hybrids, a member of IPSA since the association formed in 1989.
