GRDC supports a series of workshops on pre-emergent herbicides across Queensland and northern New South Wales

Australia
September 26, 2014

With herbicide tolerance escalating across the major cropping areas of NSW and Queensland, the northern grains industry is being forced to rethink its reliance on knockdown herbicides as a means of boosting the effectiveness and sustainability of weed control.

Pre-emergent herbicides are becoming increasingly used in integrated weed management programs as advisors and growers look to alternative modes of action for hard-to-kill weeds like fleabane, barnyard grass and an increasing range of weeds with resistance to post-emergent herbicides.

For many, the challenge in using pre-emergent herbicides lies in ensuring they work consistently with minimal crop damage. This requires an understanding of both the label directions and the chemical properties of pre-emergent herbicides and how these interact with the soil and environment.

The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) is supporting a series of workshops across Queensland and northern NSW during October and November aimed at boosting advisors’ understanding of pre-emergent herbicides and factors affecting their efficacy.

Developed and hosted by ICAN, the workshops will run for three hours. Participants will gain an understanding of how different pre-emergent herbicides behave in the soil and as a result, be better placed to use these tools to obtain effective and reliable weed control while minimising unintended crop effects.

Workshops will focus on the soil behaviour of pre-emergent herbicides used in northern crop and fallow systems.

Topics include adsorption and binding onto stubble; volatility, photodegradation and incorporation; influence of soil type, soil moisture and position of the herbicide; solubility; the strength of herbicide binding; herbicide breakdown, persistence and rotational crop implications; and application.

Dates, locations and times are:

  • Wednesday, October 22, Emerald, 8am start
  • Thursday October 23, Biloela, 8am start
  • Monday October 27, Dalby, 2pm start

HerbicideWorkshops.htm

The October/November workshops will focus on examples mainly from summer fallow and summer cropping situations while a second workshop series planned for March 2015 will focus more on case examples relevant to winter crops.

The March 2015 workshop series will concentrate on central NSW with some additional locations in northern NSW and Queensland based on demand. Those who cannot make the October/November workshops but would like to attend a subsequent workshop should contact ICAN to register their interest.
