Yield increase leads U.S. sunflower production higher

Canada
October 10, 2014

U.S. sunflower production is expected higher this year, thanks to a significant bump in the average yield compared to 2013.

Today’s USDA crop progress report pegged total American sunflower output for this year at 1.11 million tonnes, a 21% increase from last year’s crop of just over 922,000 tonnes.

Sunflower planted area for this year, at 1.57 million acres, is down 8% from the June estimate and down fractionally from last year. However, U.S. sunflower growers are still expected to harvest 1.51 million acres, down 7% from June but up 2% from the 2013 acreage. In contrast, the October yield forecast, at 1,626 lbs/acre, is 248 lbs higher than last year’s yield.

As of Oct. 1, higher yields were expected in 7 of the 9 main sunflower states compared with last year, with only California and Minnesota expecting a decline in average yields. The forecasted production in North Dakota, the leading sunflower-producing state, is pegged 1.1 billion lbs (499,000 tonnes), up a whopping 81% from 2013 due to a combination of improved yields and increased acreage this year compared with last year when poor conditions hampered planting.

Sunflower harvested area in North Dakota this year is estimated at 655,000 acres, up from 477,000 in 2013, while the 2014 average yield, at 1,679 lbs/acre, is way above 1,275 last year.

Today’s report contained no breakdown between oil and non-oil sunflower varieties.

This year’s Canadian sunflower crop is pegged at 74,800 tonnes, compared to 51,900 in 2013.
