IPM innovation in Europe: Congress details

Europe
November 5, 2014

Novotel Hotel, PoznanThe international congress being held to mark the end of the PURE research project promises to be an outstanding opportunity for all those involved in plant protection to meet, discuss and broaden their knowledge with a focus on the implementation of Integrated Pest Management (IPM).

PURE, an acronym for Pesticide Use-and-risk Reduction in European farming systems with Integrated Pest Management, will be sharing the knowledge, experience, methodological breakthroughs and new solutions in the area of IPM it has gained at 'IPM Innovation in Europe', which runs from January 14 to 16, 2015, at the Novotel Hotel (pictured) in Poznan, Poland.

The congress will present and discuss the accomplishments of PURE, which has been developing new methods, tools and technologies, and designing and testing IPM solutions in various European regions for major cropping systems. These systems have included wheat-based rotations, maize-based cropping systems, field vegetables, grapevine, pome fruit, and protected vegetables.

The organisers of the event have recently issued the fourth circular for the event, which includes all the information required for booking and accommodation and can be downloaded at the end of this article. The circular includes the programme and lists the topics to be addressed through plenary and parallel sessions:

  • IPM implementation - experiences from the implementation of National Action Plans

Throughout the congress a 'market square' is being organised, offering the chance to view posters and demonstrations, including videos showing experiences from PURE's co-innovation work in wheat-based rotations and vegetable production. Specific equipment will be demonstrated including airborne sampling and optical sensing methods, molecular-based diagnostic tools, a decision engine for weed control, mating disruption for pest control and precise crop protection products applied according to canopy density sensing.

Prior to the congress, on Tuesday January 13, the Coordinated IPM in Europe project (C-IPM) will be holding a research and development workshop. The main focus of the workshop will be the different histories of IPM research throughout European Member States.

In particular, an opening session will examine the organisation of IPM research in different European countries, the major topics addressed and the translation into practice of research outcomes. A second session will be devoted to discussions on research methods and approaches adopted throughout Member States (analytical research versus a more holistic approach), the added value of long-term experiments and the relevance of demonstration farms. Registration for the C-IPM workshop will be open shortly.
