Monsanto Canada recognized as one of Canada's Top 100 Employers

Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
November 5, 2014

Monsanto Canada has been selected as one of Canada's Top 100 Employers in Mediacorp Canada Inc.'s annual survey of Canadian businesses. This is the 7th time in the past eight years Monsanto has been recognized as one of Canada's Top 100 Employers.

Now in its 15th year, the Canada's Top 100 Employers project is a national competition to determine which employers lead their industries in offering exceptional workplaces for their employees. The listing ranks employers based on a nation-wide survey, an extensive application process and analysis of eight key areas: (1) Physical Workplace; (2) Work Atmosphere and Social; (3) Health, Financial and Family Benefits; (4) Vacation and Time Off; (5) Employee Communications; (6) Performance Management; (7) Training and Skill Development; and (8) Community Involvement.

Considered the most in-depth analysis of human resource trends in Canada's private and public sectors, this year's review saw more than 3,250 employers participate in the application process.

"We are committed to developing our employees and attracting 'best-in-class' talent," said Mike McGuire, president and general manager of Monsanto Canada. "To be successful as a business, we have to create an environment where people are engaged and enjoy coming to work every day. That requires focus, innovation, flexibility and a willingness to seek feedback and always improve."

McGuire also emphasized that as a sustainable agriculture company, Monsanto is committed to helping farmers, farm better and addressing some of the real challenges facing the planet - from extreme weather to the changing availability of natural resources. "That mission gives employees a strong sense of purpose and certainly helps contribute to a positive and rewarding work environment."

In assessing Monsanto Canada's programs and policies, Mediacorp scored Monsanto's health and family-friendly benefits; training and skills development programs; and community involvement as "exceptional," giving Monsanto A+, the highest grade possible. The company also ranked high (A) in the areas of work atmosphere and communications; vacation and personal time off; and employee engagement.

Some of the reasons why Monsanto Canada was selected as one of Canada's Top 100 Employers for 2015:

  • provides maternity and parental leave top-up payments to employees who are new mothers or adoptive parents (to 90% of salary for 26 weeks) and offers a generous subsidy for fertility drugs, up to $15,000;

  • employees can balance working and personal lives by taking advantage of a variety of flexible work arrangements including shortened and compressed work week options, telecommuting and reduced summer hours;

  • encourages employees to be active in the community by providing paid volunteer time and matching employer contributions to the charitable organizations where they donate time and money;

  • is located in the University of Manitoba's unique SmartPark alongside other research and technology companies, offering employees convenient access to the university's many amenities;

  • invests in ongoing employee education through generous tuition subsidies for courses taken at outside institutions, to $10,000, as well as a variety of in-house and online training options;

  • helps employees plan for life after work with retirement planning assistance, phased-in work options when nearing retirement, and a defined contribution pension plan;

  • offers more personal time off with three weeks of starting vacation and additional personal paid days off, as well as paid time off during the Christmas holiday season.

The complete listing of Canada's Top 100 Employers for 2015 was published in a special supplement in the November 4 edition of The Globe and Mail and on the job search engine, www.Eluta.ca.
