In the presence of HRH King Willem Alexander, the Dutch Government through Minister Kamp honored Solynta as Dutch National Icon for its breakthrough discovery ”Hybrid Potatoes from True seeds"
Minister Kamp:
“This breakthrough technique makes it possible to grow potatoes from true-seed instead of seed-tubers and makes targeted breeding possible. Valuable traits can now be utilized quickly, like disease resistance, nutritional value, and higher yields. Solynta underlines with this project the important Dutch contribution to the global food supply.

Solynta’s Hybrid Potatoes from True Seeds
Solynta contributes to feeding the world's growing and often malnourished population.
We accomplish this by enabling the Solynta's F1 hybrid breeding technology in Potato,
- to develop new varieties which
- yield more,
- under harsher conditions​,
- needs far less pesticides and fungicides
- with beneficial traits for consumers, farmers and processors.
- develop true seeds as superior starting material instead of degenerated, infected and perishable seed tubers (30 grams Solynta true-seeds compares to 2500kilo seed-tubers)

The Dutch government laureates both innovative as well as breakthrough projects which will contribute to future wealth and wellbeing and contributes to solving important societal problems. Through this competition the Dutch Government wants to inspire the Netherlands and showcase Dutch excellence to the world.

Nationaal Icoon 2014 - hybride aardappels
De aardappel is qua omzet het vierde landbouwgewas ter wereld. Toch staat de innovatie van dit gewas al ongeveer 60 jaar nagenoeg stil; nog steeds is ‘bintje’ het grootste ras in Europa.
Solynta komt met een nieuwe veredelingstechniek met aardappelzaad in plaats van pootgoed. Zo kan het genetisch materiaal van de aardappel verbeterd en gevarieerd worden.
Minister Kamp van Economische Zaken: “Deze baanbrekende techniek maakt het mogelijk de voedingswaarde van aardappels te vergroten en verschillende aardappeltypes te verbouwen.” Dit betekent efficiëntere opslag en transport en minder ziektes. “Solynta onderstreept met dit project de belangrijke Nederlandse bijdrage aan de mondiale wereldvoedselvoorziening.”
