Alvordton, Ohio: Soybean cyst nematodes (SCN) are not something that grower Nathan Baker has ever been too concerned about. But as a Syngenta Seed Advisor in northwest Ohio, Baker decided to test seed treatments for himself – not just for his own operations, but also for his customers.

Baker conducted his own side-by-side trials using the same varieties of NK® Soybeans. On one half of the trials, conducted across five different fields, Baker planted NK Soybeans S29-V2 brand treated with CruiserMaxx® Beans with Vibrance® seed treatment, a combination of separately registered products. On the other half, he planted soybeans treated with Clariva Complete Beans seed treatment, a combination of separately registered products.

“Over the five fields, it was very consistent 2 bushels per acre better in the fields where I planted seed treated with Clariva Complete Beans,” Baker said.

SCN isn’t a pest that is easy to spot with the naked eye, so growers may not know they have it in their fields.

“I was not convinced that we had soybean cyst nematode,” Baker said. “But this was a good way to find out. The fact that there was a yield advantage when there was no other difference shows that there is something to using Clariva Complete Beans.”

For Baker, knowing the success that he had with Clariva Complete Beans makes his pitch to his customers more genuine. After all, he plans to treat all of his soybeans with Clariva Complete Beans next year.

“For what the treatment costs, with a 2-bushel advantage, you’re roughly doubling your money.”
