Western Australia - Grain pest webinar offers 2014 snapshot and glimpse of year ahead

Western Australia
November 24, 2014

Grain growers, agronomists and researchers can get the latest information on pests and diseases which have impacted crops in 2014.

The Department of Agriculture and Food is hosting an interactive webinar during which plant pathologists and entomologists will provide information and advice on prevalent crop pests.

Department research officer Geoff Thomas said the webinar would provide valuable information to anybody associated with grains production in WA.

“We are piloting the webinar as another tool to get critical pest and disease information out to those in the WA grains industry,” he said. “If successful, we would expect to hold these interactive web sessions regularly.”

Experts will provide an update on the pests and diseases which were prominent this season and look at the implications for the 2015 season.

Specific topics to be covered include root diseases rhizoctonia, take-all and crown rot. Insecticide resistance in red legged earth mite and impact of wheat and barley leaf rust pathotypes will also be discussed.

“Participants will also get up to date advice on loose smut in barley, including discussion around appropriate use of seed dressings for more susceptible varieties such as Hindmarsh,” Mr Thomas said.

The webinar will run Tuesday 9 December at 8.30am for one hour. To register or for more information contact Geoff Thomas on 9368 3937 or geoff.thomas@agric.wa.gov.au
