New Plant Breeding Academy graduates to improve Africa's 'orphan' crops

Davis, California, USA
December 17, 2014

The African Plant Breeding Academy, run by the University of California, Davis, in collaboration with Mars Incorporated and their global partners, graduated its first class of plant breeders in Nairobi, Kenya last week. The first class of 21 graduates includes four women and 17 men, representing 11 nations and 19 institutions throughout Africa (full text).

The UC Davis Plant Breeding Academy (PBA) is a program for advanced training of plant breeders.  Established in 2006, with programs in the USA, Europe, Asia and Africa, it has become the most significant program of its kind.  The program was attended by 171 breeders, representing 44 countries, more than 80 organizations and numerous different crops, coming from a variety of backgrounds (20% PhD, 26% MSc, 54% BSc or equivalents).

The fourth class of the European Plant Breeding Academy will start in October 2015 and is now open for registration.  The format of the program allows us to move the sessions to different countries and expose the participants to variety of crops and environments. Employers appreciate the opportunity to provide their valued employees advanced training without disrupting their full-time employment. Participants attend six 6-day sessions over approximately two years.

A discount is available for registrations received before March 31, 2015.
