Canterra Seeds launches revolutionary canola hybrid resistant to the new 5X clubroot pathotype

Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
January 21, 2015

David Hansen, President and CEO of Winnipeg-based seed company, CANTERRA SEEDS, announced today the company will be launching the first canola hybrid with any level of resistance to the new 5X clubroot pathotype. CS2000* will have the most comprehensive clubroot resistance available on the market, and will be available to growers for 2015 planting.

CS2000 is the newest addition to the CANTERRA SEEDS canola portfolio and brings innovation in clubroot resistance together with overall top-of-class performance never before seen in Western Canada.

"CS2000 is a huge step forward for growers battling clubroot," says David Hansen, President and CEO of CANTERRA SEEDS. "And just as importantly, it also brings excellent yield, standability and agronomic characteristics. It's a win-win variety for us and for our retailer partners who strive to bring the very best genetics to their farmer customers."

CS2000 was recently acquired by CANTERRA SEEDS from their canola breeding partner DL Seeds, and has already undergone years of in-field and lab testing. Official clubroot testing by Dr. Strelkov of the University of Alberta, confirmed the hybrid has resistance to existing clubroot pathotypes 2,3,5,6 and 8 and intermediate reaction to the newest 5X pathotype, which was first discovered in a field north of Edmonton, AB in 2013. CS2000 is currently the only registered canola hybrid to show tolerance to this pathotype.

"This improvement in clubroot resistance is the result of years of behind-the-scenes efforts by our breeding partner," said Hansen. "We strongly believe that farmers will see the benefits in including CS2000 in their seeding plans, not only to access the highest levels of clubroot resistance but also to avail themselves of a variety with top-notch yields and a solid agronomic package."

Owned by over 200 western Canadian shareholders, CANTERRA SEEDS is committed to sourcing genetically superior seed products that meet end-user needs, while delivering agronomic and economic benefits for producers. With a versatile portfolio of cereals, pulses and oilseeds, CANTERRA SEEDS seeks opportunities that allow for mutual success in the agriculture industry.
