India - Inauguration of Gubba Germplasm bank

Gubba Cold Storage , today unveiled the launch of India's first Pvt. Seed bank Gubba's Germplasm Bank at Medchal, Ranga Reddy District with a technological tie up with ICRISAT. On this occasion Gubba hosted a conference for the Seed Industry " Gubba Seed Conference" for nurturing seed genetics. Gubba Germplasm Bank was inaugurated by Mrs. Amala Akkineni, prominent actress and an animal welfare activist graced the occasion as Chief guest and Mr.K C Bansal, Director NBPGR as the Guest Of Honour.

Germplasm Banks play a crucial role in the conservation and use of Biodiversity. They are important institutions, not just for the preservation of Germplasm but also for its sustainable use. Germplasm banks are also expected to generate and provide new scientific knowledge and information on Ecosystems, species and genes.

Gubba Seed Conference was attended by dignitaries of Seed fraternity and addressed topics relating to Genetics such as ' Genetic Resouces their value/ importance, significance in crop improvement, exploration, collection ,preservation , maintainance, regeneration, rejuvenation and replenishement: concepts, principles and practices. Genetic resources maintainance: Gene banks : Types of storages, essential features, storage environment and control, standard operating procedures , documenting, records & reports and precautions.

The program started on a welcome note to the seedmen by Mr.Gubba Kiran followed by two panel discussions moderated by Mrs. Gubba Rajyalakshmi and Mr.Gubba Prashant. The speakers were...

  • Mr.Vilas Tonapi,Director of Sorghum Research, ICAR
  • Mrs. Mahalakshmi, a plant/seed physiologist with over 40 years of experience.
  • Mr. V Sankaran, Ph D  in  Agriculture  with  specialization in  Seed  Science  &  Technology
  • Mr.Ram Kaundinya, a PGDM with specialization in Agriculture from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad
  • Prof. K C Bansal, Director, National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR), ICAR, New Delhi.

Mr. Sankaran emphasized  on conserving  seed that have the power to preserve species. Conservation of germplasm not only helps to balance the ecosystem but also to live the current way of life. He implied the need to jointly work for the conservation of the same. And, to keep the sprit alive he proposed that we should start greeting fellow seedmen with "JAI BEEJ" rather than just 'Good Morning'.

Mr.Vilas Tonapi stressed on doubling food production and conserving the natural resources. Sharing of germplasms among the seed industry and working for better produce could result in conserving our vast diversity. working towards fighting world's hunger, he said that there are a few lakhs of species which have been considered endangered due to lack of proper preservation facilities.

Mrs.Mahalakshmi focussed on process and procedures and systems to be observed in a Genebank. She being a consultant for Gubba Germplasm Bank created about the credibility of infrastructure here where Orthodox seeds are conserved. A fully secured facility with basic cleaning, drying and moisture levels for the Seed will be done at the lab.

Mr.Ram Kaundinya, reiterated that the need for the germplasm to be conserved and preserved by utilizing the material stored in seed banks.

Prof. K C Bansal (pictured) shared the need where the Seed Fraternity exchanges germplasm to develop diverse species as well as conserve them. He also reiterated the government norms in terms of the support to the Seed Companies in the face of sharing. India is one of the countries with a vast bio diversity and yet deal with endangered species. He suggested that the wild species are to be explored which can prove to be good alternative feeding crops for the growing population.

- Gubba Germplasm bank has an OSHAS certificate for the safety standards unveiled by Mr.Ravi Reddy of Rohini Seeds.

- IGBC, Green building certificate was unveiled by Mr.Jai Sehgal , Hytech Seeds.

- The 1st  locker key at Gubba Germplasm bank is presented to Mr. P S Raju of Green Foundation Seeds.

Mr.Gubba Nagender Rao felicitated the honorable speakers and the conference concluded with a vote of thanks presented by Gubba Deepthi followed by a musical performance that entertained the guests.
