A milestone: new hybrid maize variety launched in Pakistan

Hybrid Maize Seed launching ceremony of Punjab Seed Corporation held on Monday, 23rd February, 2015 at Flatties Hotel. The Punjab Agriculture Minister Dr. Farrukh Javed was the chief guest at the launching ceremony. Punjab Seed Corporation (PSC) commenced maize hybrid seed (YH-1898) evolved by the researchers and scientists of Maize and Millet Research Institute Sahiwal in alliance with the Punjab Seed Corporation. Minister for Agriculture Punjab Dr. Farrukh Javed said that this is a milestone that will propel the agriculture sector and confine the monopoly of multinationals in Pakistan. He appreciated the efforts by the PSC for developing maize hybrid seed which is three times cheaper than other hybrids marketed by multinationals. The yield potential claimed by concerned breeders is highly promising to attain better crop comparable to imported seed, he added. He also said that executing the Vision 2025 of Chief Minister Punjab, a large number of projects have been started to boost the exports of agriculture products by adopting value addition technology to meet the requirements of world markets , as per standards of WTO regime.
