Hazera holds Latin America Seminar 2015 in the Dominican Republic

March 12, 2015

On February 22 – 27 of this year, a professional international seminar, composed of lectures and field days, was held in the Dominican Republic. The seminar was attended by 50 participants from various Latin American countries: Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Cuba and the Dominican Republic.

We held the seminar this year in the Dominican Republic due to the geographic proximity to our customers and because Ferquido, our leading distributor, collaborated with us in organizing the event. Ferquido is currently one of Hazera’s biggest distributors in Latin America, and one of our biggest customers in the world. With the assistance of the distributor, and his support and ties with the customers, we succeeded in holding a wonderful conference.

The conference opened in the capital city of Santo Domingo, with a day of lectures by experts in the following topics:
• Tomatoes: Yaron Giras – Tomato Global Product Manager
• Onion: Ben de Nijs – Regional Product Manager – Onion, Radish, Leek
• Fertilization of onions using advanced technology: Jose Arias – Director Departamento AgroTécnico de Ferquido (DTF)
• Activities of the distributor Ferquido in the Dominican Republic: Marcial Najri – Ferquido’s CEO
Hazera’s representatives who attended the conference included Yuval Cohen – Manager of the America Business Unit, Moshe Oren – Sales Manager in Latin America, Nadav Sander – Sales Manager in the Caribbean, Ben de Nijs – Regional Product Manager – Onion, Radish, Leek and Yaron Giras – Tomato Global Product Manager.

The next two days were devoted to visiting exhibition plots with determinate tomatoes grown in open fields. Displayed in the plots were some 11 varieties that were new in the region and the world. We also visited an onion field in the Agro Calin farm, where we were impressed by the varieties that showed excellent results compared to competing varieties, and were introduced to a new pink variety called Calin, marking the collaboration between the companies. Calin is an early ripening pink variety with very high yields, that will break into new markets. A new industrial tomato variety was also introduced, and attracted great interest among the region’s farmers.
During the field visits, customers received detailed and professional explanations by Hazera’s product managers and owners of the plots.

On the third day we visited another region of the island called Constanza, about three hours away and at an altitude of 1200 meters above sea level. In Constanza we visited experimental plots of Brassica varieties, open field tomatoes, peppers, lettuce and onions. We kicked off the visit in the lettuce field, where we were presented with seven varieties adapted to this region, which were a great success and kindled interest among customers. Next we visited greenhouses growing hydroponic lettuce varieties, which also made a great impression. The highlight was a visit to the field with Brassica, which excited interest and a demand for new varieties.
On the last day, we participated in team building activities aimed at bolstering the relations between the team and our distributors. Our visitors enjoyed a two hour boat cruise, a visit to breathtaking beaches, and other fascinating attractions.

At the end of the event certificates of merit were awarded to the participants, as well as gifts, in an event attended by members of Ferquido’s management.

The event attracted attention in the Dominican Republic, and was covered by three leading agriculture magazines, and a local television channel conducted interviews with the Hazera team, growers and guests.

The person who is responsible for the support and establishment of our excellent relationships with Ferquido and other distributors in Latin America is Nadav Sander, who is now retiring at the age 82. Nadav has had an illustrious career spanning 34 years, during which he managed the Berurim farm, worked in the Commercial Department in Turkey, Eastern Europe, the Far East, Latin America, and in the Caribbean in recent years.
During the seminar, we held a farewell party for Nadav, that was a touching event that moved us all.
