The next green intellectual property haven: CIOPORA to host 54th Annual General Meeting, held in Hamburg April 27-30

Hamburg, Germany
April 8, 2015

CIOPORA, the International Association of Breeders of Asexually Reproduced Ornamental and Fruit Varieties, will host members and friends from around the world April 27-30, 2015, at the 54th Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Hamburg.  This event gathers innovative breeders from the ornamental and fruit sectors, as well as intellectual property (IP) experts, to discuss the current system of IP protection for plant innovation and ultimately design the blueprint for CIOPORA’s position on IP for plants.

“Our mission at CIOPORA is to advocate for better protection for innovation and for a deeper respect for those who have improved the world of plants,” said Andrea Mansuino, President of CIOPORA.  “We exist to create a fair environment for those who are granted a protection title for their new varieties and want to exercise their rights to enforce them against piracy and plagiarism. The AGM is an important event in the realization of our mission, in that it allows thought leaders in horticulture to convene and discuss the trajectory of the future of the industry – and that is exactly what we plan to do at the AGM 2015.”

AGM ‘Open Part’ to Provide Deep Insights on the Horticulture Business of Tomorrow

While the main objective of CIOPORA is to advocate on behalf of member companies from the ornamental and fruit sectors, the AGM also provides a platform for both member and non-member companies from the sectors to engage in a productive exchange on a series of topics that are currently shaping horticulture around the world.  The ‘Open Part’ of the AGM will be held Wednesday, April 29, from 13:30 to 18:00 at the Marriot Hotel Hamburg and will also be open to companies that are not members of CIOPORA.  A variety of topics will be discussed during this afternoon session, including the highly-anticipated Broccoli and Tomato Decision of the Enlarged Board of Appeal (EBoA) of the European Patent Office, which will be led by Dr. Tom Wittop Koning, Partner at AOMB.  The first block of presentations will also cover legal topics such as:

  • Implementation of Nagoya Protocol in the European Union
    • Mrs. Anke van den Hurk, Deputy Director, Plantum
  • International System of Cooperation:  Facilitating application for Plant Variety Rights Worldwide
    • Mr. Peter Button, Vice Secretary General of UPOV

The second block of presentations during the ‘Open Part’ will focus on marketing and innovation.  These presentations will include:

  • New Trends in Consumer Oriented Approach to Flower Marketing
    • Mr. Alexander Zoern, Managing Director, Blume2000
  • The Power of Brand:  Four Steps to Maximize Growth in Challenging Markets
    • Dr. Annette Bruce, CEO, Creative Advantage
  •  Variety Innovation in the German Fruit Industry
    • Mr. Dirk Zabel, Head of Variety Innovation, DOSK Group

CIOPORA Members Gather for Discussion of Further Positions on IP

The overarching objective of CIOPORA is to develop an effective system of IP protection that not only creates incentives for innovators but also secures the market position of all honest businesses involved in the production chain, providing them with a competitive advantage.  During the AGM 2015, CIOPORA members will continue the discussion of Position Papers on IP which were initiated during the IP Conference in Venlo, the Netherlands, in 2012.  These documents, which address Essentially Derived Varieties, Patents for Plant-Related Inventions and General Matters on Plant Breeders’ Rights, will echo the breeders’ vision on IP policy and serve as a medium for the breeders’ voice before policymakers.

The AGM 2015 will take place at the Marriot Hotel Hamburg, with special networking events and business excursions taking place throughout Hamburg and the surrounding area.  The business excursions will be divided into two programs, one for ornamentals and one for fruits.  The ornamental excursion will include a specialized tour of the brand new concept store of Blume2000, a leading German floral retailer, and visits to Rosen Tantau as well as Hachmann Rhododendron Nursery.  For the fruit excursion, AGM participants will tour the Esteburg Center of Fruit Production where they will have the opportunity to hear from experts and researchers from the fruit breeder sector.  The fruit excursion will also include outings to the organic fruit farm Rolker Ökofrucht GmbH and the Fruit Research Center Esteburg.

Guests of CIOPORA are welcome to the AGM ‘Open Part’ and business discussions on April 29-30.  For more information, or to register, visit http://agm.ciopora.org or call the CIOPORA team in Germany at +49 40 555 63 702.
