Syngenta wins 2015 INFORMS Franz Edelman Award

Greensboro, North Carolina, USA
April 14, 2015

  • Syngenta “Good Growth through Advanced Analytics” named winner
  • Award is the world’s most prestigious recognition for excellence in applying advanced analytics to benefit business and humanitarian outcomes
  • Selected from one of six finalist organizations in award contention

The Syngenta “Good Growth through Advanced Analytics” program has won the 2015 INFORMS Franz Edelman Award for Achievement in Operations Research and the Management Sciences. The Franz Edelman competition acknowledges significant contributions of analytics and operations research in the profit and non-profit sectors. Since its inception in 1972, cumulative dollar benefits from Edelman finalist projects have reached nearly $225 billion.

The “Good Growth through Advanced Analytics” program is a Syngenta soybean breeding team initiative using advanced mathematics and new technologies to develop higher yielding soybean varieties. Through increased genetic gain, the program is improving soybean variety accuracy, selection intensity, genetic variation and generation time without using more land, water or inputs.

“Syngenta is committed to addressing the global food security challenge,” said Joseph Byrum, Syngenta Global Head Soybean R&D. “Agricultural productivity must increase in order to feed a global population. It’s an honor for our team to be recognized with this award for our efforts to make crops more efficient.”

The award, now in its 44th year, is respected as the world’s most prestigious recognition for excellence in applying advanced analytics to benefit business and humanitarian outcomes. The other 2015 finalists were:

  • IBM for “Predictive Cloud Computing with Big Data: Professional Golf and Tennis Forecasting”
  • Ingram Micro for “End-to-End Business Analytics and Optimization in Ingram Micro’s Two-Tier Distribution Business”
  • LMI/Defense Logistics Agency for “Peak and Next Gen: Effective Inventory Control for Items with Infrequent or Frequent, Highly Variable Demand”
  • Saudi Arabia Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs for “A Decision Support System for Hajj Crowd Management”
  • U.S. Army and Sandia National Laboratories for “Maximizing the Army's Future Contribution to Global Security Using the Capability Portfolio Analysis Tool (CPAT)”

“The purpose of the Franz Edelman competition is to bring forward, recognize and reward outstanding examples of operations research, management science and advanced analytics in practice in the world,” said Stephen M. Robinson, President, INFORMS. “Through the use of advanced mathematics and analytics, and other innovative approaches, Syngenta is helping farmers out in the field increase yield.”

Syngenta partnered with New Jersey-based, decision analytics firm KROMITE to jointly reevaluate crop R&D program operations, which resulted in improved crop output, reduced time-to-market, significant cost optimization and increased portfolio value. Syngenta and KROMITE developed new analytical tools to improve the process of growing a wider variety of healthy crops with greater yield. Using these new tools dramatically improved project lead training, decision-making and planning, and analytical thinking in the organization. With KROMITE’s continued support, Syngenta has initiated a multi-year effort to customize and launch similar tools across all major crop areas.

“We strive to be at the forefront of innovation in soybean plant breeding,” added Byrum. “We are proud of this recognition and how Syngenta is helping farmers grow more from less.”
