Australian OGTR - Invitation to comment on a draft licence application form for the commercial release of GM plants

Australia
April 17, 2015

Source: OGTR

The Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) has developed a new application form specifically for the commercial release of GM plants: Application for a licence for dealings involving intentional release (DIR) of GM plants into the environment - commercial release.

The Gene Technology Act 2000 provides for two types of licence applications to authorise the intentional release of a GMO into the environment. One type covers GMOs used for experimental purposes, a limited and controlled release, while the second covers all other cases, typically a commercial release.

The OGTR is currently developing distinct application forms for each type of release; initially for GM plants. In 2013 the OGTR provided an application form for a limited and controlled release (field trial) of a GM plant. We are now asking for comments on this second new form that is intended to cover a commercial release of a GM plant.

The draft application form contains guidance designed to assist with completing the form. A separate document containing example answers for some of the questions is intended to illustrate the kind of information expected for conducting risk analysis. When the finalised application form is made available on the OGTR website, there will be hyperlinks between the application form and the example answers.

If you have any specific queries please contact the OGTR on free call 1800 181 030 or by email.

Please submit your written comments by 29 May 2015.
