Fujian province, China - Pingtan to mechanize peanut production

China
April 21, 2015

The Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone in Fujian province has brought in a full set of advanced machinery from Taiwan for peanut production, authorities say.

The imported equipment, including rotavators, harvesters and husking machines, are capable of mechanizing the production process, said Lin Congyue, an official of the local economic development bureau, adding that it will be the first time for the equipment to be used as a whole in Fujian province.

The equipment was demonstrated in Luzhi township on April 2, before an audience of some 60 visitors including agricultural experts, government officials and farmers.

Pingtan’s authorities compared more than 20 companies before finally choosing a harvester produced by a Taiwan manufacturer which was more durable and efficient, according to Lin.

“Taiwan has more developed agriculture, and has been aadvocate leader in technology and innovation. Peanuts and yams are two major crops in Pingtan. And the advanced equipment will help reduce production costs while increasing efficiency. Moreover, it will boost agricultural communication between Fujian and Taiwan,” he said.

A harvester can cut labor costs by 500 to 600 yuan per mu (667 sq m), and a seeder is equivalent to 16 laborers.
