A free webinar hosted by USDA Office of Pest Management Policy and the American Phytopathological Society (APS) will discuss an exotic seed borne virus, called Cowpea mild mottle virus (CPMMV) that infects a wide range of cultivated legumes and poses a threat to U.S. soybean production.
In Florida last year, an isolate of CPPMV was detected using next-generation sequencing in DNA extracts of a whitefly, a common vector of viruses. No specific expertise exists to detect the virus visually, and no molecular detection assays are currently available. Consequently, no monitoring is carried out to detect CPPMV.
To avoid a disastrous introduction and subsequent spread, presenter Judith Brown, an APS Fellow and a pioneer in the study of the molecular epidemiology of whitefly-transmitted viruses, will discuss this virus in more detail, as well as the need to:
- Develop accurate CPPMV diagnostics
- Apply diagnostics to determine the extent of the seed borne nature of the virus in legume species
- Develop training materials, and train diagnosticians and legume growers who may encounter this disease on beans, cowpea, and soybean.
Dr. Brown’s webinar will take place Tuesday, May 19 from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. CDT. This presentation is free, but registration/seating is limited. Grower leaders, researchers, extension agents, consultants, qualified state soybean board staff, and those in government and regulatory are encouraged to register as soon as possible at
