June 12, 2015

The Sorghum Checkoff recently named Brent Bean, Ph.D., as the organization’s agronomist. In this role, Bean will provide leadership for the sorghum industry in identifying critical sorghum agronomic issues and designing targeted national and regionally based programs that provide farm-level yield advancements. His efforts will focus on grain, forage, sweet and biomass sorghum.

“We are excited to welcome Brent to the Sorghum Checkoff team as our agronomist,” said Florentino Lopez, Sorghum Checkoff executive director. “Brent brings a wealth of experience to the organization and possesses a passion for the industry that will help the Sorghum Checkoff reach the goals established by the board toward achieving producer profitability.”

Bean formerly was the director of agronomy for NexSteppe Inc. where he had worldwide responsibilities for agronomy research and determining best management practices for optimizing biomass and sweet sorghum production.

His background also includes extensive field-level experiences as an agronomist for Texas A&M Research and Extension for more than 25 years. His bachelor’s and master’s degrees in crop science are from Texas Tech University, and his Ph.D. in weed science is from the University of Nebraska. Bean is a recognized expert in dryland and irrigated production of grain and forage sorghum, energy sorghum and corn.
