World Potato Congress to open in Beijing

Beijing, China
July 14, 2015

To welcome the 2015 World Potato Congress which is due to open by the end of July in Beijing, a special potato cooking competition was held in Yanqing, Beijing on July 9.

As a new choice to ensure food security, the potato is becoming a staple after rice, wheat and corn in China. In the competition, cooks made different dishes using fried, deviled, stewed and boiled potatoes. "Food made of potato flour such as dumplings and noodles is not only tasty but also rich in vitamins," said Zhao Tiehua, a retiree, who is busy in the kitchen dressed in an apron, with a rolling pin in hand. Zhang Aiguo, who has been working in restaurants for more than 10 years, said that potatoes are low in sugar and can be a good food for weight loss compared with wheat flour.

At the upcoming World Potato Congress, more than 3,000 people from over 30 countries will gather in Yanqing, Beijing. Experts from both home and abroad will engage in a deep discussion on government policy, technological support, product processing and consumption.
