Pioneer sales representatives in Iowa cover plots with cover crops - Educational field events hosted with collaborators The Nature Conservancy and La Crosse Seed

Johnston, Iowa, USA
July 27, 2015

Pioneer sales representatives across Iowa will be planting cover crops in their grower demonstration plots in an effort to further educate Iowa growers about the benefits of this conservation tool. In collaboration with La Crosse Seed and The Nature Conservancy in Iowa, each Iowa Pioneer sales representative has received a "toolkit" with cover crop seed and educational materials to share with local growers.

Cover crops are an important tool in the nutrient management toolbox," said Brent Wilson, technical services manager for DuPont Pioneer in Iowa. "However, we know that cover crop management is a learning process for many farmers across the state. We look forward to ongoing learning and sharing information about how we best integrate this tool into farm operations."

The goal of the cover crop planting is to continue conservation conversations across Iowa. Cover crop benefits include soil health and nutrient management, and this project may provide a better understanding on overall conservation tools, including cover crops, conservation tillage, precision agriculture nutrient management tools, or a combination of all, that may work best in a specific situation.

The cover crop plots planted in 2015 will utilize Soil First™ 101 Cover Starter Mix, a mix of cereal rye and daikon radish from La Crosse Seed. Each rep will work to place a plot and host an educational field day for local growers, with additional materials provided by The Nature Conservancy.
