August 2015
One day conference on Thursday 3 September 2015
Organisation and venue: Wageningen University and Research Centre, The Netherlands
Worldwide, potato crops suffer from late blight, a potato disease caused by Phytophthora infestans. The Netherlands government funded a research programme (2006 – 2015) entitled 'Durable Resistance against Phytophthora by cisgenic modification (DuRPh)', to combat this disease. Key-issues in this research are the deployment of multiple resistance genes from wild potato species in one cultivar, combined with a resistance management strategy. Effective resistance management is essential to minimise chances of breaking resistance, to limit dependence on chemical pesticides, and to prevent occurrence of resistance of Phytophthora for pesticides used.
Conference
This one-day conference will present the results of DuRPh and selected similar approaches in wheat and banana aimed at durable disease resistance. The programme consists of lectures, a panel discussion and a visit to a field with susceptible and resistant potato plants from the DuRPh programme.
The conference will be of interest to scientists in the field of breeding, plant pathology, agronomy, and integrated disease management.
