PGRO appoints Dr Lea Wiesel to the role of Plant Pathologist

United Kingdom
August 10, 2015

Dr Lea WieselPGRO, the non statutory levy body which is the UK's centre of excellence for peas and beans, has appointed Dr Lea Wiesel (pictured) to the role of Plant Pathologist from August 1st.

Chief Executive Roger Vickers says that Dr Wiesel further strengthens the PGRO research and agronomy team that underpins the organisation’s strategic objective of supporting UK pulses by improving the productivity, efficiency and sustainability of growers’ crops - and by working with other organisations to support innovative crop research.

Dr Wiesel joins PGRO from a role as 'Knowledge Transfer Partnership Associate' at OMEX Agrifluids Ltd and the James Hutton Institute where she worked developing new products for agricultural pesticide reduction through robust enhancement of crop health by identification and development of novel resistance activators. The project aims at the identification of elicitor compounds that improve plant immunity for the development of biostimulant and biopesticide products.

Before that, she was a post-doctoral researcher at the James Hutton Institute and then 'Commercial Research Scientist' at EnPrint Ltd., UK, an R&D spin off company from the James Hutton Institute working on development of a molecular screening tool for detection and identification of Cryptosporidium for water treatment applications.

Dr Wiesel has a PhD in Plant and Soil Science from The James Hutton Institute / University of Nottingham; a Diplom in Biology, Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen; and a Vordiplom in Biology, University of Cologne.

Roger Vickers adds, “Lea Wiesel brings a wide range of academic and research experience and skills to PGRO that is matched by a track record of successfully managing projects with commercial relevance.”
