Western Australia - eDemonstration sites key to unlocking new technology

Western Australia

eConnected Grainbelt project
Rebecca Wallis, of the Grower Group Alliance, discusses the eConnected Grainbelt project with the Department of Agriculture and Food’s Tim Maling and Katherine Davies.

Western Australian grain grower groups have a unique opportunity to host a fully operational automatic weather station and soil moisture probe at no financial cost.

The equipment will form part of five eDemonstration sites to be established throughout the wheatbelt as part of the Department of Agriculture and Food’s eConnected Grainbelt project, made possible by Royalties for Regions.

To secure a site, groups will be required to commit to supporting the project by providing feedback on what information technology would benefit members’ farm businesses and evaluate new digital tools.

Project manager Tim Maling said the eDemonstration sites were pivotal to the success of the project.

“The project aims to develop new electronic decision making tools that are both related to the weather and soil moisture information from the sites, as well as other tools that will improve growers’ productivity and profitability,” Mr Maling said.

“This could include enhancements to the department’s existing online tools, like the rainfall to date or soil water tool, or completely new web-based programs or apps.

“The scope for these tools is very broad – anything from yields and fertiliser calculations, for example, to economic analysis to market options.

“This is a great opportunity for participants to tell us what information they need and how it should be delivered to help boost their farm businesses.”

The weather stations and soil moisture probes are set to be installed on the five successful grower group members’ properties before the start of the 2016 growing season.

Participating groups would be required to engage their members in the project and encourage ideas, opinions and discussion about decision making tools and to critique new systems and technology.

A consultant will work with the groups and liaise with the department.

The new eDemonstration sites will be integrated into the department’s existing network of 136 weather stations.

More information about hosting an eDemonstration is available on the department website or call Katherine Davies on +61 (0)8 9690 2169 or email econnectedgrainbelt@agric.wa.gov.au

Expressions of interest to host a site close 5pm, Friday, 25 September.
