Western Australian potato growers will have the rare opportunity to learn from world-leading Potato virus Y researcher, Dr Alexander Karasev, from the University of Idaho at a special potato growers workshop to be held in Manjimup on Monday 21 September.
 
Dr Karasev is an internationally renowned Potato virus Y expert from the University of Idaho, and will provide potato growers with the most relevant and up-to-date research on the devastating virus.
 
“We are pleased to welcome Dr Karasev, such a well-respected and highly credentialed researcher, to Western Australia to inform the state’s growers on the latest developments with the disease,” said AUSVEG spokesperson Alexander Miller.
 
“Potato virus Y poses as a major risk for growers in Western Australia and other regions around the country and it is vitally important for growers to have access to the latest management information in order for them to avoid a serious outbreak that could heavily impact their production.”
 
AUSVEG is Australia’s leading horticultural body representing more than 2,000 potato growers.
 
The Western Australia potato growers workshop will be jointly hosted by AUSVEG, as part of the Potato Industry Extension Program, and DAFWA, and will provide attendees with the most up-to-date industry research on a number of important issues for potato growers.
 
Joining Dr Karasev will be representatives from DAFWA discussing varietal reactions to Potato virus Y and an overview of potato certification. AUSVEG will provide an update on local research and development (R&D), as well as biosecurity measures that can be implemented on farm, also helping to minimise the potential for disease and pest outbreaks.
 
“Western Australia is a major potato growing area in Australia, and providing growers with the latest R&D information can ensure the local industry is able to continue producing high quality potatoes,” said Mr Miller.     
 
“Workshops such as this are a great way for growers to have direct contact with leading local and international researchers and industry experts, allowing for interactive information sharing that is relevant to growers in that region.”
 
The workshop will be held on Monday 21 September 2:00pm – 5:00pm at The Gallery at the Manjimup Library and is free to attend, with refreshments provided. Growers are encouraged to register their attendance with AUSVEG on (03) 9882 0277 or at info@ausveg.com.au.
 
The Potato Industry Extension Program aims to raise awareness of research and development findings and agronomic activities that could deliver strong benefits to growers and processors. The program has been funded by Horticulture Innovation Australia using the National Potato Levies and funds from the Australian Government.
