Australia’s incoming Chief Scientist welcomed by vegetable and potato industries

Australia
October 27, 2015

AUSVEG, the National Peak Industry Body for vegetable and potato growers, has welcomed the appointment of Dr Alan Finkel AO as Australia’s next Chief Scientist from January 2016.

Dr Finkel has a long and distinguished background in Australian science, including his role as Chancellor of Monash University and President of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, as well as establishing the Australian Science magazine Cosmos, which has a proud record of publicising and celebrating Australian innovation and scientific discovery.

“AUSVEG looks forward to working closely with the highly esteemed Dr Alan Finkel to ensure Australia’s vegetable and potato industries are at the forefront of global biosecurity and scientific research and innovation,” said AUSVEG National Manager – Scientific Affairs Dr Jessica Lye.

“The importance of maintaining vigilant biosecurity practices and keeping up to date with the latest scientific research is critical to Australia’s vegetable and potato growers as they work to keep devastating pests and diseases away from Australia’s shores.”

“Dr Finkel has a long and diverse history in many different fields and is well-placed to provide insightful advice to the Government on science, technology and innovation.”

“We are confident Dr Finkel’s appointment will benefit Australia’s vegetable and potato industries.”

AUSVEG is the leading horticultural body representing Australia’s 9,000 vegetable and potato growers.

Dr Finkel will succeed Professor Ian Chubb AC, who has made a valuable contribution to science in Australia since his appointment in May 2011.

“AUSVEG has been proud of its congenial relationship with Professor Ian Chubb in his role as Australia’s Chief Scientist and praises him on his tireless work for the Australian scientific community,” said Dr Lye.

“We look forward to continuing this relationship with Dr Finkel when he succeeds Professor Chubb next year and will work to ensure that Australia’s vegetable and potato growers – as well as consumers – can benefit from the most innovative and advanced scientific research in the years to come.”
