Several dozen researchers from Wageningen UR will visit the climate summit COP21 (the 21st Conference of Parties, the UN meeting on climate change) in Paris from 30 November till 11 December. They will give lectures, visit workshops and participate in discussions. The Wageningen researchers will report back daily in various ways. On 27 November, prior to the climate summit, the Twitter master class The Wageningen Guide to a Climate Smart Future (#COP21Wageningen) will be held.
The Wageningen contribution of expertise for the international COP21 summit includes the themes ‘climate smart agriculture’ and the role of forests and the soil in climate change.

Climate smart agriculture
Floods, drought, salinisation, extreme temperatures or pests and diseases as a result of climate change threaten agricultural production, such as grain harvests. On the other hand, agriculture also contributes to climate change, for instance through the emission of greenhouse gases from the soil or from livestock. Using Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA), Wageningen UR researchers are looking for systems that both reduce emissions and are adapted to climate change, while still providing adequate yields to meet the food demand. The Wageningen UR climate smart agriculture idea has now been adopted by hundreds of organisations.
Climate and soil
Soil plays a central role in the carbon cycle. Climate proof soil retains more water, is more productive due to better structure and fertility, and is thus ecologically responsible and economically feasible. With the ‘4 promille’ (quattre promille) initiative, France wishes to emphasise the importance of soil for our food production and efficiently utilise the potential of soil for absorbing greenhouse gases.
Climate and forest
There are three thousand billion trees in the world; 422 for every human. But the total number of trees used to be twice as high. Through the UN programme REDD+, Wageningen UR researchers are investigating how CO2 emissions can be limited by reducing deforestation and forest degradation.
Twitter master class
On Friday 27 November from 12.30-13.30 everyone can take part in the Twitter master class Wageningen Guide to a Climate Smart Future. Four researchers will give an introduction to their vision and contribution to climate solutions in Impulse on Wageningen Campus. Through the hashtag ‘#COP21Wageningen’ everyone can view this master class online, respond and ask questions. The Twitter master class can also be viewed live with Periscope or at www.wageningenur.nl/twittermasterclass. The language of instruction is English.

Wageningen UR op COP21 met klimaatslimme landbouw
Enkele tientallen onderzoekers van Wageningen UR bezoeken in Parijs de klimaattop COP21 (de 21e Conference of Parties, de VN-bijeenkomst over klimaatverandering) van 30 november tot 11 december. Ze geven voordrachten, bezoeken workshops en doen mee aan discussies. De Wageningers doen dagelijks op diverse manieren verslag. Voorafgaand aan de klimaattop is er op 27 november de Twittermasterclass The Wageningen Guide to a Climate Smart Future (#COP21Wageningen).
De Wageningse inbreng en expertise voor de internationale COP21-top betreft onder meer de thema’s ‘klimaatslimme’ landbouw en de rol van bossen en de bodem in klimaatverandering.
Alle kerninformatie over Wagenings onderzoek en basisinformatie over klimaatverandering is te vinden op de speciale themapagina Klimaatverandering. Klimaatslimme landbouw
Overstromingen, droogte, verzilting, extreme temperaturen of plagen en ziekten als gevolg van klimaatverandering bedreigen de agrarische productie, zoals graanoogsten. Anderzijds draagt de landbouw ook bij aan klimaatveranderingen, bijvoorbeeld door de uitstoot van broeikasgassen uit de bodem of van de veestapel. Met klimaatslimme landbouw (Climate Smart Agriculture, CSA) zoeken Wageningse onderzoekers naar systemen die zowel de uitstoot verminderen, aangepast zijn aan de klimaatverandering, terwijl de opbrengsten toch aan de vraag naar voedsel kunnen voldoen. Het Wageningse klimaatslimme landbouwidee wordt inmiddels door honderd organisaties omarmd.
Klimaat en bodem
De bodem speelt een centrale rol in de koolstofcyclus. Klimaatbestendige bodems houden meer water vast, zijn productiever vanwege een betere structuur en bodemvruchtbaarheid, en zijn zo ecologisch verantwoord en economisch haalbaar. Met het zgn. 4 promille (quattre promille) initiatief wil Frankrijk het belang van bodem voor onze voedselproductie onderstrepen en de potentie van de bodem voor de opname van broeikasgassen benutten.
Klimaat en bos
De wereld telt drieduizend miljard bomen, voor elk mens 422. Maar dit totaalaantal was ooit twee keer zo hoog. Wageningse wetenschappers onderzoeken in het VN-programma REDD+ hoe de uitstoot van CO2 te beperken door ontbossing en bosdegradatie tegen te gaan.

Vrijdag 27 november van 12.30-13.30 uur kan iedereen deelnemen aan de Twittermasterclass Wageningen Guide to a Climate Smart Future. Vier onderzoekers geven in Impulse op Wageningen Campus een inleiding met hun visie en bijdrage aan klimaatoplossingen.
