Thursday night February 4th Sundrop Farms was declared winner of the Tomato Inspiration Award 2016. The 100 most innovative tomato growers in the world came together in Berlin for the 3rd edition of the Tomato Inspiration Event. This year the attendees chose the winner themselves.

The 3rd Tomato Inspiration Award was given to Philipp Saumweber of Sundrop Farms at the Puro Skybar in Berlin during the annual Tomato Inspiration Event. This time no specific themes and no international jury. During the event, the attendees were asked to vote for the nominee that inspired them the most. Previous winners of the award - Windset Farms (2014) and Duijvestijn Tomaten (2015), as well as the 7 partners of the event, have individually contributed to a longlist of inspiring producers or producer associations. The quest for the best possible consensus resulted in four nominations: APS Salads from Cheshire (UK), the Flandria label of the joint Belgian auctions (LAVA) from Leuven (Belgium), Sundrop Farms from Adelaide (Australia) and Zeiler Gemüsevertrieb from Münchendorf (Austria). The nominees had been introduced earlier via short trailers in HortiBiz’s newsletter and on HortiBiz.com. Sundrop Farms received the most votes and was therefor declared winner of the Tomato Inspiration Award 2016.

Sundrop Farms is a developer, owner and operator of high tech greenhouse facilities that rely on nature’s abundance of sunlight and saltwater to produce high-value crops. This year Sundrop Farms will open a 20 hectare state-of-the-art greenhouse facility in Port Augusta, South Australia. The site will include four 5ha controlled greenhouses, a desalination plant and solar field comprising of a 115 metre high tower and more than 23,000 mirrors reflecting the sun’s energy. The 20 hectare site will be the first of its kind globally, employing approximately 175 people and producing more than 17,000 tonnes of tomatoes annually using solar power, seawater and natural pest management.

The Tomato Inspiration Event is an initiative by HortiBiz. The event is being funded by Bayer, Delphy, Koppert Biological Systems, Oerlemans Plastics, Priva, Saint-Gobain Cultilene and Svensson.
 

Sundrop Farms wint Tomato Inspiration Award 2016

Donderdagavond 4 februari is Sundrop Farms uitgeroepen tot winnaar van de Tomato Inspiration Award 2016. De 100 meest innovatieve tomatentelers uit de wereld kwamen samen in Berlijn voor de derde editie van het Tomato Inspiration Event. Dit jaar konden de gasten zelf de winnaar kiezen.

De derde Tomato Inspiration Award werd overhandigd aan Philipp Saumweber van Sundrop Farms in de Puro Skybar in Berlijn tijdens het jaarlijkse Tomato Inspiration Event. Dit keer was er geen specifiek thema aan de prijs verbonden en was er ook geen internationale jury. Tijdens het evenement konden de deelnemers hun stem uitbrengen op de genomineerde die hen het meest inspireert. De eerdere winnaars Windset Farms (2014) en Duijvestijn Tomaten (2015) droegen samen met de zeven partners van het event individueel bij aan de samenstelling van een lange lijst met inspirerende producenten en productenorganisaties.

De zoektocht naar de best mogelijk consensus resulteerde in vier nominaties: APS Salads uit Cheshire (VK), het Flandria-label van de gezamenlijke Belgische veilingen (LAVA) uit Leuven (België), Sundrop Farms uit Adelaide (Australië) en Zeiler Gemüsevertrieb uit Münchendorf (Oostenrijk). De genomineerden werden eerder al bekendgemaakt door middel van korte trailers in de nieuwsbrief van HortiBiz en op HortiBiz.com. Sundrop Farms ontving uiteindelijk de meeste stemmen en werd daarom uitgeroepen tot winnaar van de Tomato Inspiration Award 2016.

Het Australische Sundrop Farms is de ontwikkelaar, eigenaar en exploitant van hightech productiefaciliteiten die afhankelijk zijn van de natuurlijke bronnen zonlicht en zeewater om een hoge kwaliteit producten te telen. Dit jaar opent Sundrop Farms een ‘state of the art’ faciliteit in Port Augusta, in het zuiden van Australië. Deze locatie omvat 4 gecontroleerde kassen van elk 5 hectare, een ontziltingsinstallatie en een veld met zonnepanelen, dat bestaat uit een 115 meter hoge toren en meer dan 23.000 spiegels die de energie van de zon vangen. De nieuwe locatie is wereldwijd enig in zijn soort, moet werk verschaffen aan zo’n 175 mensen en meer dan 17.000 ton tomaten op jaarbasis produceren op basis van zonne-energie, zeewater en natuurlijke gewasbescherming.
