Seed Processing Holland join forces with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Boeing, South African Airlines and Sunchem SA

Enkhuizen, The Netherlands
March 30, 2016

Seed Processing Holland join forces with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Boeing, South African Airlines and Sunchem SA.

In December 2015 SPH has started a cooperation with the company SkyNRG. SkyNRG is an affiliate company of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and other prominent organisations with the core task to develop sustainable jet fuels. SkyNRG uses sustainable oil of which is converted into A1 Bio-jet fuel.

One of the feedstocks used is the plant Solaris, a special bred nicotine free tobacco variety cultivated by Sunchem Holding, Italy. The seeds contain around 33 % oil. The solaris plant is now grown on commercial scale in South Africa and is supported by Boeing, South African Airlines and Sunchem SA.

The seed pods that are produced need to be dried, threshed and cleaned (conditioned) after which the seeds can be pressed for oil. Not only the oil, but also the by-products, like the oil cake is used for animal feed and the threshing waste (bio mass) can be used for production of biogas. In this way a sustainable cycle is created not only providing new sources of income for the rural areas in South Africa but also creating new jobs.

Because the need for biofuels will increase in the coming years, there will be a challenge in producing, drying, threshing and cleaning of large volumes of these seeds. Therefore SPH has teamed up with this project to design a processing plant for these purposes. This project is partly funded by the Dutch government through their Transition Facility program.
