Syngenta Seeds provides proven hybrids for double-crop sorghum - Double cropping after wheat provides additional revenue opportunities for U.S. growers

Minnetonka, Minnesota, USA
June 28, 2010

June 28, 2010 — With enough moisture in key regions this year, many growers across Kansas and Oklahoma may decide to double crop behind their winter wheat acres to take advantage of an additional revenue stream. Short season grain sorghum hybrids offer a double-crop option especially well suited to the High Plains.

“Under current, favorable conditions of abundant moisture, growers looking to double crop should consider sorghum,” said Steve Sick, sorghum product manager at Syngenta Seeds, Inc. “This very tolerant crop can help growers maximize double-crop yields with extremely little management.”

With adequate time before frost and the right conditions, growers can look to plant sorghum into wheat stubble by early July. To best maximize results, growers should use hybrids with strong emergence and early vigor, stress tolerance and high-yield potential to ensure a profitable second crop.

Working with a complete lineup of sorghum products, Syngenta Seeds offers the following grain sorghum hybrids proven to perform for double crop:

  • 5875, which is a 54 day mid-bloom variety with outstanding yield and strong early vigor suitable for mid-July planting.
  • H-307, which is a tall hybrid and 60-day mid-bloom with excellent emergence and a top choice for moisture-limited areas.
  • H-390W, which is an agronomically sound hybrid with very good yield potential and a 63 day mid-bloom proven to work across every environment.

Growers should contact their local Garst® seed advisor, Golden Harvest® dealer or NK® Seeds retailer to determine the best product for their specific double-crop sorghum needs.
