This year is of great significance for carrying out the key special projects of breeding new varieties of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). As one of the 16 national key special scientific programs, this one is jointly organized and implemented by 11 departments of the State Council, in accordance with national strategies as well as agricultural and industrial development demand. The program aims at developing a group of genes with great application values and independent intellectual property rights, and breeding and promoting new varieties of GMOs with high yield and efficiency, which are resistant to diseases, insect pests and stress. The program is expected to raise the capacity of independent innovation in agricultural science and technology, and develop the emerging bio-industry with strategic importance, thus providing strong scientific support to national food security, ecological safety and income increase of farmers.

Further efforts have been taken in the program in gathering resources, technologies and talents, on the basis of achievements of National 863 Program, 973 Program, Special Projects for Research and Industrialization of Transgenic Plants, and High-tech Industrialization Program. Consequently, active progress has been witnessed in breeding new varieties of GMOs, cloning of new genes, transgenic technologies, bio-safety technology and its industrialization.
