Soybean Association and Iowa State University publish weed field guide

Ankeny, Iowa, USA
August 24, 2010

The Iowa Soybean Association (ISA) and Iowa State University (ISU) have developed a new resource to help soybean growers recognize and manage weed problems.

The Weed Identification Field Guide includes images and descriptions of 56 broadleaf weeds and 19 grass and grass-like weeds. The 104 page booklet includes tools to aid in accurate weed identification as well as weed lifecycle and herbicide management and stewardship information. It also includes detailed diagrams, including 24 illustrations, and more than 250 high-quality photographs of weeds common to Iowa.

Bob Hartzler, Iowa State University Extension weed scientist, says weeds have historically been and will continue to remain the most economically damaging pest complex that Iowa soybean growers face. “Farmers lose more money due to weeds than any disease complex,” Hartzler says. “Therefore, it is critical to recognize weed issues and take measures to mitigate them.”

According to David Wright, director of contract research and strategic initiatives at ISA, the new weed guide is a must have tool for farmers and crop specialists. “As herbicide programs change in soybean and corn production, the need to discriminate among yield robbing weeds is important,” he concludes.

The Weed Identification Field Guide will be available at the ISA and ISU exhibits at the Farm Progress Show at Boone, Iowa, Aug. 31-Sept. 2. Individuals who fill out a questionnaire will receive a complimentary copy.

Starting in early September, the guides will also be available on the ISU Extension Publications Online Store at www.extension.iastate.edu/store/ or by contacting the ISU Extension Publications Distribution Center, 119 Printing and Publications Building, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa 50011-3171; telephone (515) 294-5247; fax (515) 294-2945; or e-mail pubdist@iastate.edu.

Printing of this publication was supported by Iowa State University Extension and checkoff funds from the Iowa Soybean Association. Support was also received from Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc., a DuPont business, and the Iowa Certified Crop Advisers Board.

This project is the fourth in a series of pocket-sized soybean field guide developed in collaboration between ISA and ISU’s Corn and Soybean Initiative. The publications are designed for durability and to fit conveniently in a pocket or glove compartment. More than 250,000 copies of the field guides have been produced and distributed. Past field guides are the Soybean Disease and Pest Management Field Guide, Soybean Aphid Management Field Guide and Soybean Cyst Nematode Management Field Guide. ISU has also produced a Corn Field Guide.
