Interview with Roland Peerenboom - Enza Zaden

How will the European legislation address the issue of availability of organic seed? What will be the rules for granting exceptions based on "non-availability"?

This will be monitored through the database system.

Suppliers will have to indicate in this database next to each variety whether it is available or not available.

Only in such cases where growers can prove that they are also not able to obtain similar varieties organically will they obtain an exemption to use untreated conventional seeds.

These exemptions will be given for one sowing only, and the next time the control and application system will review again.

This also gives the seed companies the opportunity to produce the required organic seeds in time for the next sowing.

Over time, demand and supply will be better organized and fewer exceptions will be necessary.
