Itronics Inc. (OTCBB:ITRO) today reported that its
subsidiary, Itronics Metallurgical, Inc., has obtained excellent
results from a GOLD'n GRO fertilizer field application trial
that demonstrates a reduction in sun damage to tomatoes compared
to standard grower practice.
"The test was conducted specifically to determine if GOLD'n GRO
products would work as part of a proprietary sunscreen product
for tomatoes," said Dr. John Whitney, Itronics President.
In the trial, two GOLD'n GRO products were blended with a
sunscreen product developed for use on tomatoes. The blended
product reduced the leaf curl that occurs during the hot summer
days in the Central Valley of California. Leaf curl exposes the
tomato fruit on the plants to the sun and can severely damage
them, causing the loss of 20 percent or more of a grower's crop.
The proprietary
blended product successfully reduced sun damage in several
thousand acres of tomatoes in late June and July.
"Only a small amount of GOLD'n GRO products, less than two
quarts per acre, are needed to be combined with the sunscreen
product, making this a very economical program for the tomato
growers," said Dr. Whitney.
According to U.S. Department of Agricultural statistics, there
are approximately 125,370 acres of tomatoes grown nationally and
the value of the crop is about $1.25 billion, or $9,968 per
acre. California has some 32,000 acres of tomatoes.
Itronics Metallurgical sells its high performance GOLD'n GRO
liquid fertilizer, which can be used for lawns and plants, and
its popular Silver Nevada Miner bars, a souvenir of the Silver
State, through its shopping cart catalog at the Company's Web
site
http://www.itronics.com. Through a proprietary technology,
Itronics Metallurgical extracts silver and other toxic metals
from liquid
photographic waste and manufactures environmentally beneficial
liquid fertilizers from the remaining material. The facility in
Reno, Nevada is believed to be the only commercial plant in the
world that can accomplish this.
Itronics Inc. is one of Nevada's leading process technology
development companies and a world leader in photochemical
recycling. Headquartered in Reno, Nevada, it specializes in
recycling technology development, photobyproduct recycling,
silver refining, and technical services for the mining and
recycling industries. Dr. John Whitney, Itronics President, was
selected as Nevada's Inventor of the Year for 2000 and is a
