Heinz congratulates authors for cracking the `Color Code'; lycopene in rich red tomatoes helps to reduce risks of some cancers
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
March 11, 2002

A new book has refreshing nutrition news: A splash of tomato sauce and a few wild blueberries will not only brighten your table, they'll help you stay healthy. That's why H.J. Heinz Company (NYSE:HNZ) congratulates the authors of The Color Code for the great work they have done to endorse healthful eating and living. Joining Pittsburgh-based H.J. Heinz Company in endorsing the book is the Wild Blueberry Association of North America, in Bar Harbor, Maine. H.J. Heinz Company is the largest processor of tomatoes and tomato products in the world. Its flagship product is Heinz Tomato Ketchup. The Wild Blueberry Association works to ensure that the benefits of eating wild blueberries are known and understood nationwide.

The Color Code was co-authored by three experts in their respective fields: neuroscience researcher James Joseph, Ph.D., endocrinologist Daniel Nadeau, M.D., and Newsweek nutrition writer Anne Underwood. The Color Code puts forth a dietary plan based on research showing that colorful foods -- green beans, golden corn, orange tangerines, and of course, zesty red tomatoes and ripe wild blueberries -- help reduce the risk of disease. Published by Hyperion, the book is available in bookstores nationwide and at amazon.com.

For years, Heinz has been working with researchers to uncover all of the facts about the antioxidant lycopene, a cartenoid that gives tomatoes and strawberries their red hue. Research from across the world suggest that a diet rich in lycopene helps to reduce the risk of some kinds of cancer, heart disease, and other ailments.

"We at the H.J. Heinz Company support adding a touch of color through fruits and vegetables to your every meal," said David Yeung, Ph.D., general manager, global nutrition, H.J. Heinz Company. "Mealtime should be a healthy experience, one that appeals to both the eyes and the palate!"

Dr. Yeung is also a co-author of the consumer-friendly book Unlock the Power of Lycopene, which contains a wealth of information about the potential health benefits of tomatoes and lycopene.
