Wooster, Ohio
October 3, 2005
Tomato farmers and
processors, crop protection specialists, tomato seed industry
personnel, Extension educators, and anyone else involved in the
business of growing tomatoes are invited to the 20th Annual Tomato
Disease Workshop, Oct. 20-21 on the Wooster campus of the
Ohio
Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC).
Presentations will include research results on breeding for disease
resistance and on chemical, cultural and biological
disease-management strategies, said Sally Miller, one of the
organizers and a plant pathologist with OARDC and Ohio State
University Extension.
"The goal of this workshop is to provide a forum for presentation of
new products and recent research results targeting tomato diseases,"
Miller said. "It also provides an opportunity for researchers,
processing, fresh-market and greenhouse tomato producers, seed and
crop protection industry personnel, and others to interact and
address disease-management issues facing the tomato industry."
The workshop was started in the 1980s to address bacterial canker, a
serious problem of tomatoes, and has expanded to include a wide
array of diseases that currently threaten the profitability of the
industry. It is the only workshop that focuses strictly on
presenting up-to-date information on currently critical
tomato-disease problems. Participants come from all over the
country.
Registration is $50 due by Oct. 10; on-site registration is $60. A
registration form and a complete list of presentations can be
accessed at

(scroll down to "Meetings and Field Days"). For further details,
contact Miller at (330) 263-3678 or miller.769@osu.edu.
An optional tour of nearby Amish vegetable farms in Wayne and Holmes
counties will be offered Oct. 21 in the afternoon. Contact Miller if
interested in this tour.
OARDC and OSU Extension are part of Ohio State's College of Food,
Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.
