Western Australia - New barley variety guide to assist growers plan for next season

South Perth, Western Australia
November 15, 2012

The Department of Agriculture and Food has released the 2013 Barley Variety Guide to assist grain growers with variety selections for next season.

The guide enables growers to determine which barley variety is best suited to their region, along with domestic and international market feedback, relative grain yield comparisons, disease ratings and more.

Department Grains Industry executive director Mark Sweetingham said the guide, co-funded by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), was a valuable tool for growers to decide which barley variety would give them the highest profit margin.

“Identifying which option will lead to the greatest return for a grower is a complex process,” Dr Sweetingham said.

“In some instances, the price premium paid for a malting variety will more than offset the yield difference between malting and food or feed varieties.

“With Western Australia exporting $297 million of barley grain and malt in 2010-11, it is vital we provide grain growers with as much information as possible for them to derive the best value from their barley production.”

The 2013 guide also includes new features including:

  • information on four varieties in stage two of the Barley Australia accreditation process that may become available to Western Australian growers in 2013
  • a table to assist growers in distinguishing physical characteristics of varieties to assist them to determine what variety is in their paddock
  • information on genes for powdery mildew and barley leaf rust for effective variety resistance.

Department development officer Amelia McLarty said the guide also provided more information than previously to enable growers to benchmark what different malting varieties were likely to do across a range of different grain yield and screenings scenarios.

“This will enable growers to make informed decisions on the most appropriate barley variety for their business, agronomy and in line with market demand,” Ms McLarty said.

“Before planting any variety with a malting or food classification, growers are advised to talk to their preferred grain acquirer to determine the demand for each variety, potential premiums and segregation opportunities.”

The 2013 Barley Variety Guide is being mailed to growers through the GRDC network. It is also available from the department website agric.wa.gov.au by searching for bulletin 4836.
