Western Australia - How well do you know your soils?

South Perth, Western Australia
July 8, 2013

The ‘Get to know soils deeper’ road show is an opportunity for growers and industry to learn about the greatest and latest soil technology and research findings to manage healthy soils.

Hosted by the Department of Agriculture and Food, the road show will bring together department experts with an emphasis on soils as a whole.

Department research officer Natalie Hogg said of particular interest would be the interactions between soil organic matter, acidity, water repellence, compaction and nutrition.

“The focus will be on more effective management practices with discussion of profitable solutions to ensure healthy soils,” Ms Hogg said.

“Following on from the success of a recently held consultant soils day, we have decided to extend the road show so growers get the opportunity to hear a modified version of what was presented.

“Growers need to manage soils as a whole and not as individual issues so they can get a better return on investment.”

It’s important that growers sample top and subsurface soils to measure soil characteristics so they have good information to better make decisions on investments in soil inputs and management.

“This is an excellent opportunity for growers to ask the questions they have never had answered which will give them the confidence to make changes when it comes to managing soils,” Ms Hogg said.

Many of the soil constraints that cost growers thousands of dollars every year in lost grain production can be overcome when decisions are based on appropriate measurements and advice.

“By making changes, growers can manage their soils to be more productive,” he said. “Some of these changes don’t necessarily cost a lot, which is especially important when budgets are tight.”

‘Get to know soils deeper’ will be held:

  • Tuesday 23 July- Badgingarra
  • Tuesday 6 August- Mingenew
  • Wednesday 7 August- Wongan Hills
  • Wednesday 14 August- Wickepin
  • Thursday 15 August- Gnowangerup
