Spider mite, fall armyworm webcasts featured in ‘Focus on Corn’ resource

St. Paul, Minnesota, USA
July 30, 2013

Spider mites and fall armyworm are two economically important, perennial pests in the United States.

As part of its effort to enhance the health, management, and production of corn crops, two new ‘Focus on Corn’ webcasts were produced to offer the latest details on spider mite and fall armyworm management.

Spider Mite Management in Corn” by Dr. Ed Bynum, Assistant Professor and Extension Entomologist at Texas A&M University, provides consultants, growers, and other practitioners across the corn producing states with important information about spider mite management. Specifically, Dr. Bynum discusses…

- Options for spider mite management
- The importance of natural spider mite predators and factors contributing to control failures
- Damage symptoms
- Spider mites’ biology and life cycle

Corn Grain Loss to Fall Armyworm and its Associated Fungi, and Optimal Insecticide Spray Timing on the Texas Southern High Plainsby Dr. Patrick Porter, Extension Entomologist at Texas A&M University, presents the first known data on yield loss attributable to fall armyworm when the pest moves to the lower 2/3 of a corn ear, as is typical in the damage cycle.

This presentation discusses the infestation timeline, kernels destroyed, yield lost to both the insect and the fungi it introduces, and the effect of fall armyworm on fumonisin levels. Preliminary economic injury levels are also presented.

Both presentations are open access through October 31, 2013.   These and other Focus on Corn presentations can be viewed in the ‘Focus on Corn’ resource at www.plantmanagementnetwork.org/foc.

‘Focus on Corn’ is a publication of the Plant Management Network. To get the most out of the Plant Management Network’s full line of resources, please sign up for PMN’s free electronic newsletter, PMN Update.
