Canadian Western Red Winter milling wheat AC Emerson available from Canterra Seeds for 2014 planting - First wheat of any class to be rated resistant to fusarium head blight

Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
August 27, 2013

CANTERRA SEEDS announced that the much anticipated launch of AC™ Emerson winter wheat will occur in the fall of 2014, when Certified seed supplies are sufficient for a broad-scale introduction.

AC™ Emerson is a new Canadian Western Red Winter (CWRW) milling wheat, developed by Dr. Rob Graf at Agriculture and Agri‐Food Canada. The variety has quickly gained notoriety as the first wheat of any class to be rated resistant to fusarium head blight (FHB), and is expected to be a game changer product for areas with high FHB pressure.

CANTERRA SEEDS has been managing the seed multiplication of AC™ Emerson since 2011. Early harvest results for the variety are positive, with growers commenting on the good quality and yields. Tom Greaves, General Manager of Pitura Seeds at Domain, MB said, “AC™ Emerson out‐yielded all other winter wheat seed production on our farm this year. We were blown away with what was coming into the combine.”

The launch date for AC™ Emerson will be set for the fall of 2014, giving the company one more year to significantly ramp up seed supplies. Rick Love, Seed Production Coordinator for CANTERRA SEEDS said, “The demand for AC™ Emerson is very high, we want to be sure no one is disappointed because they can’t access seed in the launch year.” Timing is good for the launch of the variety, as CDC Falcon is proposed to be moved to the Canadian Western General Purpose (CWGP) class on August 1, 2014. AC™ Emerson is positioned to replace a large number of CDC Falcon acres.
