USA - Syngenta offers sunflower growers new option for enhanced protection against downy mildew

Minnetonka, Minnesota, USA
September 18, 2013

  • Downy mildew can cause yield losses from 50 to 95 percent in sunflowers
  • New component enhances CruiserMaxx® Sunflower insecticide/fungicide seed treatment
  • Protection with Bion® seed treatment fungicide showcased in field trials

Downy mildew, one of sunflower’s most devastating diseases, now has a new enemy - Bion® fungicide from Syngenta. Bion will be offered to growers as another component to the existing CruiserMaxx® Sunflower insecticide/fungicide seed treatment combination of separately registered products, expanding early-season disease protection in sunflowers.

Downy mildew is one of the most serious issues facing sunflower growers,” explained Scott Lawson, seed treatment product lead for diverse field crops at Syngenta. “The disease can cause yield losses of anywhere between 50 and 95 percent in sunflowers - a higher risk than any sunflower grower should take.”

During recent field trials, the use of CruiserMaxx Sunflower plus Bion seed treatment was applied to a downy mildew inoculated and susceptible hybrid. Seed treated with CruiserMaxx Sunflower plus Bion showed an 80 percent reduction in downy mildew incidence compared to untreated seed. Additionally, Bion’s unique mode of action minimized the risk of resistance development.

CruiserMaxx Sunflower is an application that currently includes Cruiser® 5FS seed treatment insecticide and Dynasty®, Maxim® 4FS and Apron XL® seed treatment fungicides. Through the benefits of CruiserMaxx Sunflower, crops achieve increased plant stand, uniformity and vigor. The combination fungicide treatment also protects against a broad range of diseases including Pythium, Fusarium, Rhizoctonia. With the addition of Bion fungicide, the seed treatment also provides enhanced downy mildew protection. The Cruiser component provides superior protection against early-season insect pests, such as wireworm, flea beetle and sunflower beetle.

“We are committed to making sunflowers easier for growers to manage,” Lawson added. “With the addition of Bion, we believe growers are receiving the best protection on the market.”
