Australia - Weed management advice for advisers via the web

Australia
November 12, 2013

Grains industry advisers in the southern cropping region are being encouraged to tune into a series of national weed management webinars beginning later this month.

Conducted by Independent Consultants Australia Network (ICAN) and sponsored by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), the webinars will focus on a different topic each week: managing fleabane in zero-till farming systems, spray application in summer fallows, and understanding stubble and soil binding of pre-emergent herbicides used for ryegrass control in winter crops.

Dr Dale Shaner (left), from Colorado in the USA, will be the presenter of a webinar on understanding stubble and soil binding of pre-emergent herbicides used for ryegrass control in winter crops. Dr Shaner is pictured with ICAN’s Mark Congreve who will present a webinar on managing fleabane in zero-till farming systems.

ICAN’s Mark Congreve says advisers can simply use their laptop or personal computer to link into each 30 minute presentation from industry experts in their field, after which webinar participants can ask the presenters questions.

“The webinars are free of charge, however, participants will be required to pre-register to receive a link to the webinar software,” Mr Congreve said. Details for each webinar are:

  • Friday, November 29 – managing fleabane in zero-till farming systems. Flaxleaf fleabane has been a prolific weed of zero-till farming systems in the northern region for over 10 years and can now be found in zero-till farming systems in all mainland states. This webinar will highlight the ecology of fleabane and why this is driving the spread of fleabane across the nation, glyphosate resistance status and weed control tactics that have been successfully employed in the northern region to manage this weed. This webinar will be presented by Mark Congreve (ICAN) and Peter McKenzie (Agricultural Consulting & Extension Services) who have many years of practical experience dealing with strategies to manage this problem weed.

  • Friday, December 6 – spray application in summer fallows. Changing weed species, changing climate patterns and the requirement for double knock applications using contact herbicides to control difficult weeds are leading to an increase in summer fallow herbicide applications in most broadacre zero-till farming systems. This webinar will investigate the balance between minimising spray drift and ensuring reliable efficacy via efficient spray deposition on the target when making spray applications during the warmer summer months. The important considerations of water rates, nozzle selection, boom height and ground speed will be discussed. This webinar will be presented by respected agricultural spraying expert Bill Gordon (Bill Gordon Consulting).

  • Friday, December 13 – understanding stubble and soil binding of pre-emergent herbicides used for ryegrass control in winter crops. Pre-emergent herbicides are one of the key management tactics for managing annual ryegrass in winter crop production systems in Australia. Efficient utilisation of these tools requires an effective understanding of how these herbicides interact with soil and stubble and, following on from this, their requirements for incorporation. This webinar will investigate the properties of key pre-emergent herbicides and how the herbicide properties affect stubble binding and soil mobility. This webinar will be presented by Dr Dale Shaner from his base in Colorado, USA. Dr Shaner recently retired from the US Department of Agriculture where he had led research into residual herbicides and soil interaction for over 12 years.

All webinars will start at 10am AEDT (9:30am ACDT). To register interest, please go to http://icanrural.com.au/iwm.html.
