Syngenta enhances Weevil Trak 2014 for optimum annual bluegrass weevil control

Greensboro, North Carolina, USA
March 18, 2014

  • Weevil Trak provides accurate regional information to track annual bluegrass weevil (ABW).
  • The monitoring tool of current weevil pressure provides recommended timing of proven control strategies.
  • Free resource enables golf course superintendents and industry professionals to select primary and secondary golf courses for ABW monitoring updates.

Syngenta announced today it has upgraded Weevil Trak, an interactive tool for customized annual bluegrass weevil (ABW) tracking and control recommendations. The newly updated platform features a new look including a customized stage notification progress bar displaying the status of users controlling the first two generations of ABW. Additionally, new monitoring sites were added for better geographic coverage and more in-depth data.

At the request of superintendents, Weevil Trak users can now follow two courses, a “primary” and “secondary”, which will provide two sets of email alerts. This helps golf course superintendents be even more prepared for ABW outbreaks, since the secondary course they will follow is typically south of their primary location and will move through the alert stages earlier.

Additionally, a new map graphic has been added to the site. The map shows a wider range of courses by geography to provide Weevil Trak users with a more complete geographical representation of ABW pressure in the Northeast.

Golf course superintendents and industry professionals can depend on Weevil Trak to deliver accurate regional ABW information critical to controlling outbreaks. The customized progress bar takes users through Weevil Trak’s five stage tracking system. Users will receive notifications when they enter new stages, such as the “wait stage”, “pre-stage” and “in-stage” phases. Along each step, the Syngenta Optimum Control Strategy is communicated, providing the best recommendations for ABW control based on proven methods using Scimitar® GC, Acelepryn® and Provaunt® insecticides.

Interested golf course management professionals can view the newly updated platform, register for a Weevil Trak account and sign up for email alerts by visiting www.weeviltrak.com. Please watch the new how-to videos for various detection and monitoring techniques, such as performing soap flushes to detect adult ABW in turf, and using a salt flush and soil core sampling to help identify ABW larvae.

“Annual bluegrass weevils are difficult to manage because of year-to-year and site-to-site variability in the timing, intensity and duration of attack,” says Mike Agnew, Ph.D., Technical Manager with Syngenta.  “The information on WeevilTrak.com is essential to controlling ABW populations. There is no other tool like it in the marketplace.”

To learn more about ABW, the 2014 site provides additional tools, such as a webinar and white paper for more in-depth information. Weevil Trak works with a network of 7 independent entomologists and 39 key turfgrass consultants in the northeastern United States to increase knowledge about current weevil pressure and lead customers to proven control strategies.

“Controlling damage from annual bluegrass weevil on fairways, collars and greens was a challenge until I started using WeevilTrak.com,” says Rodger Zellner, General Manager and Superintendent at Green Pond Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa. “Weevil Trak keeps me current on what’s going on in the region, and the accuracy has been spot on.”

All Weevil Trak subscribers that subscribed February 1, 2013 or later are automatically registered for Weevil Trak in 2014.
