GRDC GrowNotes modules for sorghum, sunflower and faba beans to transform northern industry

Australia
July 8, 2014

Summer crop production in the northern grain belt has entered a new era with the launch of online Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) GrowNotes modules for sorghum and sunflower www.grdc.com.au/GrowNotes.

Launching the new modules at the Innovation Generation conference in Toowoomba late yesterday, GRDC Northern Panel chairman James Clark said the necessity for production increases was a challenge northern growers couldn’t afford to ignore.

He said research extension tools like GrowNotes offered northern grain growers an unprecedented chance to raise the bar on their production and profitability.

“The GRDC, in partnership with industry, is continually striving to raise the production bar and deliver meaningful, tangible research benefits to growers,” Mr Clark said.

“GrowNotes are a compilation of the best research information and are a direct response to grower calls for more accessible and interpreted information.

“Never before has such comprehensive information covering such a diverse range of crop production topics been available in one portal.

“The modules will be updated at least annually so that the most current research is integrated into the recommendations and growers can be sure that they are following the most up to date advice.”

Also launched at the conference was the next module in the winter crop series, Faba bean GrowNotes. This adds to the highly successful release of the wheat, barley, durum and chickpea modules earlier this year.

The GrowNotes modules offer growers a ‘one-stop-shop’ for crop production advice from pre-sowing planning through to harvest management and marketing.

Senior agronomist with B&W Rural Moree, Rob Long, said the GrowNotes modules gave growers access to the latest agronomic and research information, enabling them to make informed and timely management decisions.

“The real value of the GrowNotes concept lies in their ability to offer something for everyone, whether it’s the latest information on plant populations or row spacing, crop nutrition, spray rates, stubble management or marketing,” he said.

“The information is at growers’ fingertips, anytime of the day or night, and being digital means the content can be updated as soon as new research information comes to hand.

“GrowNotes modules are an exciting innovation for the northern grains industry and will transform the way technical information is shared across sectors.

“At the end of the day, this will give growers the tools they need to make informed agronomic and production decisions and boost farm profitability.”

Presented as an online flip-book, the GrowNotes modules collate the massive bank of research and extension work facilitated by industry and funded by organisations like GRDC over the past 20 years.
