New ‘Focus on Soybean’ webcasts cover IPM and fungicide practices

St. Paul, Minnesota, USA
July 18, 2014

With soybean pest season in full swing throughout the soybean growing regions, many growers and their consultants are busy managing a whole range of pests and disorders. The strategies will vary wildly--and so will their effectiveness.

However, sound strategies based on research are a great bet. With this in mind, the Plant Management Network has launched two new ‘Focus on Soybean’ webcasts covering integrated pest management and fungicide use. Both talks provide quality, science-based information to help growers, consultants, CCAs, and other practitioners ultimately manage their pests more effectively and profitably.

Fungicide Use on Soybean in the Midwest” by Dr. Daren Mueller, Extension Plant Pathologist at Iowa State University, helps users in the Midwestern region understand how foliar fungicides alone and in combination with insecticides affect soybean yields. Viewers can learn why foliar fungicides have emerged as an important disease management tool. They can also see yield responses to foliar fungicides and fungicide-insecticide tank mixes. By the end of this presentation, viewers should know more about the use of fungicides and the possible implications of fungicide use.

Soybean Insect Pest Management and Thresholds in the Mid-South Region” by Angus Catchot, Professor of Extension Entomology at Mississippi State University, was developed to help consultants, growers, and other practitioners in the Mid-southern United States better understand management strategies and thresholds for the most common insect pest species encountered each year in soybean production systems. In this talk, Catchot discusses the status of pests, damage potential, and action thresholds.

Both presentations are open access through September 30, 2014. Viewers can also opt to see 5-minute executive summary versions of these presentations. These shorter executive summary versions are permanently open access courtesy of the United Soybean Board.
