United Kingdom - It’s time for black-grass control with Atlantis WG from Bayer CropScience

Forecast set fair for Atlantis(BG)

Forecasts suggest it’s time for Atlantis WG

Forecasts for continued mild weather into November should focus growers’ minds on controlling black-grass this autumn, rather than relying on pre-em chemistry to ‘hold’ control over until spring.

Bayer CropScience says the successful conclusion of the winter wheat drilling campaign, coupled with good establishment conditions, has favoured emergence of grass weeds such as black-grass and that there’s now a ‘golden opportunity’ to reduce this year’s black-grass populations significantly.

“Controlling black-grass has always been difficult,” says herbicides development manager Gordon Anderson-Taylor in the company’s latest Technical Update, “but 2014 trials conducted by independent contractors and distributors showed that autumn is the time to be thinking about post-emergence herbicide applications.

“Weather forecasts into November predict that we’re unlikely to see any significant cold weather for two to three weeks, which means emerged black-grass will continue to grow and tiller.

“Hoping to tackle large, well tillered black-grass plants with applications of Atlantis WG (mesosulfuron + iodosulfuron) in spring is tantamount to preparing yourself for a failed weed control programme,” he warns. “If you experienced poor control of black-grass last season, don’t automatically assume you’ve got resistance to mesosulfuron – it’s more likely that the plant was just too big for the dose within Atlantis WG.”

Results from ten UK trials during 2013-2014 showed that there was a 29% fall in efficacy between Atlantis WG applications made at GS11-13 and those made at GS23-25. “This drop-off in control is directly related to the increased size of the plant,” Dr Anderson-Taylor points out.

“Since Atlantis WG was launched in 2003, the beginning of November has always been seen as its optimal application timing,” says Phillippa Overson, combinable crops campaign manager. “This year looks set to be a golden opportunity for growers to really get on top of black-grass populations.

“Little rainfall and above average temperatures over the next couple of weeks should provide some good spray windows,” she says, “particularly for those crops where black-grass is already well advanced.

“You might still need to deal with cleavers and wild-oats in spring, but there’s good chemistry for those. You won’t get a second chance to deal a blow to black-grass, so take it now.”
