Manage root-knot nematodes with cotton varieties in the rotation

San Antonio, Texas, USA
January 5, 2015

Two PhytoGen® cottonseed varieties reduce root-knot-nematode populations at levels equal to alternate rotation crops, according to trial data presented during the 2015 Beltwide Cotton Conferences in San Antonio.

“We are the first to the market with a root-knot-resistant variety using root-knot resistance from two sources,” PhytoGen Cotton Development Speciaist Dr. Russell Nuti says. “In multiple studies, we see about a 90 percent reduction in root-knot-nematode survival throughout the season. That’s as good as any rotation crop. It allows you to keep farming cotton on the same ground.”

PhytoGen’s cotton root-knot-nematode-resistant varieties, PhytoGen® brand PHY 417 WRF and PHY 427 WRF, were bred to provide high-level nematode resistance in varieties suited for specific geographies. PHY 417 WRF works best in Texas and Oklahoma, while PHY 427 WRF provides optimum performance in the Midsouth, Southeast and Mid-Atlantic. Both are early maturing varieties with high quality and excellent yield potential in fields with cotton root-knot-nematode pressure.

“Variety selection is key in terms of our nematode management options,” PhytoGen Cotton Development Specialist Scott Fuchs says. “With these varieties, growers have a convenient, highly effective management option.”

During Beltwide, Fuchs and Nuti presented two years of data from university studies, Official Variety Trials, and on-farm trials managed by PhytoGen cotton development specialists.

PhytoGen specialists recommend growers sample for nematodes just before or soon after harvest to determine the species of nematodes in each field.

PhytoGen, an affiliate of Dow AgroSciences, offers cottonseed varieties with the most advanced in-plant protection options, such as WideStrike® Insect Protection, WideStrike 3, and Genuity® Roundup Ready® Flex.
