GrowNote a boost for Western Australian wheat growers

Western Australia
February 24, 2015

A unique online agronomic manual was launched today (editors: Tuesday, February 24), providing a significant boost for Western Australia’s $2.5 billion wheat industry.

At Perth’s Agribusiness Crop Updates, the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) unveiled its first GrowNote for the western region.

GRDC western regional panel chairman Peter Roberts said the GRDC Wheat GrowNote would equip growers with the latest research and extension information, paving the way for valuable gains in crop production and profitability.

“GrowNotes reflect the GRDC’s commitment to equipping growers and agronomists with up-to-date, relevant and comprehensive research information,” Mr Roberts said.

“The new western region Wheat GrowNote provides an overview of wheat and a range of farm practice reference notes, and backs them up with trial results and best-practice recommendations, so WA growers can make more informed cropping decisions.”

“It follows the successful release of GrowNotes in the GRDC’s northern cropping region, where crop modules are being used extensively by growers and agronomists.”

Mr Roberts encouraged WA growers and agronomists to access the western region Wheat GrowNote (editors: link will be live 1pm AWST, February 24 www.grdc.com.au/GrowNotes) and to provide the GRDC with feedback.

“GrowNotes are living publications and the GRDC is serious about drawing on the experiences of readers to improve each new version,” he said.

Accessible by computer, tablet or smart phone the GrowNote can be viewed online or downloaded for later use in the paddock.

It is designed to be an easy read, incorporating calculators and checklists and hundreds of links to further research information and decision support tools.

“This resource covers all issues relevant to wheat growing in the western region, and allows the reader to delve into deeper levels of detail, depending on their requirements,” Mr Roberts said.

“As new, validated research results become available, these will be incorporated into the GrowNote, so readers can be confident that the crop management guidance provided represents the very latest views on best practice from Australia’s leading experts.”

GRDC GrowNotes complement specialist advisory services already offered by local agronomists and consultants by reinforcing industry best-practice advice across the production spectrum and providing hypertext links for further reading on specific issues.

“Importantly, the Wheat GrowNote will also help the GRDC identify gaps in industry research, providing feedback for consideration in future investment priorities,” Mr Roberts said.

The GRDC intends to produce additional GrowNote modules for other grain crops grown in WA.

The Agribusiness Crop Updates, hosted by the GRDC and the Department of Agriculture and Food (DAFWA), is being held at Crown Perth on February 24 and 25.
