Australia - 2015 Global Technologies in Horticulture Seminar to showcase farms of the future

Australia
June 24, 2015

Leafy green vegetables grown in the air using an LED lighting system said to be more effective than the sun, and intelligent robots that harvest ripe greenhouse vegetables with limited human involvement are among the technologies that will be profiled at a vegetable innovation forum this week.

The future of farming will be showcased to over 100 of Australia’s leading vegetable growers at the 2015 Global Technologies in Horticulture Seminar, on Thursday 25 June at Jupiters Gold Coast.

Attendees will hear from some of the world’s leading innovators in horticultural technologies, including aeroponics pioneer and AeroFarms CEO David Rosenberg from the United States, and robotics specialist Dr Jan Bontsema from the Netherlands.

“David Rosenberg is pioneering the next generation of farming with aeroponics – growing vegetables in mid-air. Using a proprietary LED lighting system that is more effective than the sun, he can produce high-quality crops year-round with no pesticide usage and 95 per cent less water than conventional methods,” said AUSVEG spokesperson Stefan Oberman.

“Dr Bontsema is currently working on an EU-funded program that aims to put the first generation of greenhouse harvesting robots onto the global market. The great thing about his cutting edge work is that it will soon be available on the market – something that most growers at the seminar will be excited to hear.”

“AUSVEG is proud to host the world’s leading agricultural innovators, including David Rosenberg and Dr Bontsema, to show Aussie growers how they can incorporate the latest, cutting-edge technology to boost the profitability, productivity and sustainability of their operations.”

AUSVEG is the leading horticultural body representing 9,000 Australian vegetable and potato growers.

The Seminar aims to educate Australian growers on the futuristic technology they can employ on-farm, and builds on a highly successful series of annual seminars facilitated by AUSVEG to help with the development of the Australian vegetable industry and ensure it remains at the pinnacle of global vegetable production.

“The 2015 Global Technologies in Horticulture Seminar is set to be the most exciting yet, with international industry leaders to educate our growers on the latest developments,” said Mr Oberman.

“If the Australian vegetable industry can leverage the knowhow of these agricultural innovators, our growers can boost their on-farm efficiency and productivity to increase the financial performance of their operations, which will ultimately benefit rural families, communities and the entire country.”
