Minimize soybean cyst nematode yeld losses with two new ‘Focus on Soybean’ webcasts

St. Paul, Minnesota, USA
June 29, 2015

Yield losses due to Soybean Cyst Nematode, or SCN, are estimated at more than 30 million bushels annually. No other pest or infectious disease poses a greater threat to soybean yields.

Two new webcasts from the Plant Management Network’s Focus on Soybean resource offer vital information on the proper identification and management of SCN in problem fields, as well as on the efficacy of new seed treatments that keep this economically important pest at bay.

The first webcast, titled “Soybean Cyst Nematode Management,” authored by George W. Bird, Professor of Nematology at Michigan State University, discusses the many facets of SCN biology and management in detail, allowing growers, consultants, and other practitioners to maximize their defenses against this economically important pest. The main points of this presentation cover SCN’s history and distribution, symptom detection and diagnosis, and management through crop rotation, resistant varieties, and seed treatments.

The second, titled “Evaluation of Seed Applied Nematicide on Soybeans,” discusses the efficacy of the latest seed treatments based on a joint research project between Iowa State University and the Iowa Soybean Association’s On-Farm Network. This talk by Tristan Mueller, Operations Manager of Agronomic Research at the Iowa Soybean Association, is particularly useful for those considering seed treatments in addition to choosing the right resistant varieties.

Both webcasts are fully open access through July 31, 2015. Viewers can also opt to see 5-minute executive summary versions of these presentations. These shorter executive summaries are permanently open access courtesy of the United Soybean Board.
